The authority’s CEO, Stanley Hui said that while the decline in cargo volumes had remained steady at around -20 per cent in each of the last three months, better than the 30 per cent plunge experienced in December and January, the ongoing downturn was still a concern.
“Cargo throughput remains the hardest hit in comparison to passenger volume and aircraft movements, reflecting the continued weakening of global trade and consumption,†Hui said.
Export volumes fell 27 per cent in April as volumes to all major markets were affected by the global downturn while import volumes dropped 16 per cent, while throughput from Southeast Asia and Japan rose slightly. Air traffic movements dropped 3.7 per cent, year on year to 24,090 compared to a year earlier.
