Hong Kong Airport Authority’s decision to further extend its 10 per cent discount on landing and parking fees for three months beginning January 1 was welcomed by home-based carriers Cathay Pacific and Dragonair. “While it is too early to say that the industry has recovered from the downturn, this decision will definitely lend support to all operators at a time when they face unfavourable factors such as continuing low yields and rising fuel prices,” said Dragonair CEO James Tong. The move could save airlines up to HK$56 million (US$7.2 million) and help them tide over the present difficult times.

To assist airlines and other operators that have been adversely affected by the global economic downturn, the Hong Kong Airport Authority offered a relief package amounting to $450 million (US$58 million) in April 2009. By the end of September 2009, a reduction of $120 million landing and parking charges have been provided to airlines. In addition, about $130 million worth of interest-free payment deferral for office and lounge rents was arranged for business partners.
