Malaysia’s Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) in Sepang outside of Kuala Lumpur will be converted into a cargo terminal once the construction of a new budget terminal is completed in the first quarter of 2012, according to the country’s Transport Minister, Kong Cho Ha. Once converted for cargo handling, the old LCCT will be able to handle 320,335 tonnes of cargo per year, increasing the overall cargo capacity of Kuala Lumpur International Airport to 1.31 million tonnes per year. Kong said the current LCCT was designed as a temporary airport and added that the new LCCT – with a 3,660 metre long runway – would be able to handle a maximum passenger capacity of 30 million people per year and have parking stands for 76 aircraft.
