All Nippon Airways plans to consolidate its cargo operations at Narita Airport next year as Narita International Airport Corporation announced plans to construct a new cargo facility, which will be leased by the airline.
Cargo Building 8, scheduled to begin service in October 2024, will have a total area of around 61,000 square metres, with some 38,000 square metres of warehouse space. Automation will be a key feature in the new facility, which will be equipped with automated guided vehicles (AGVs) as well as automated racks to move unit load devices (ULD) across the warehouse.
ANA is currently using six separate warehouses at Narita, and with the completion of the new facility in October next year, the airline will consolidate its cargo operations into adjacent locations Cargo Building No. 7 and the newly constructed Cargo Building No. 8. It will also expand its animal and valuables storage facilities to meet a wide range of transportation demands.
The Japanese carrier said the move is expected to improve efficiency in the handling systems, secure sufficient space and enhance the quality of cargo handling. With the planned consolidation, the two groups believe this could bolster the airport’s role as an international gateway, with faster cargo transit times between Asia and North America.
In line with its decarbonization efforts, NAA aims to attain net zero energy building (ZEB) certification for newly constructed buildings in accordance with Building-Housing Energy-efficiency Labeling System (BELS). On 28 July 2023, Cargo Building No. 8 achieved the “ZEB Oriented” certification from Japan’s Ministry of Environment, by adopting high-efficiency air conditioning equipment and building materials with high thermal insulation performance. Plans are underway to install a photovoltaic power generation system at the new facility.
