From 2 to 6 October 2023, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore hosted the 48th ATWG meeting, which ended Singapore’s two-year chairmanship in the ASEAN Air Transport Working Group.
Under Singapore’s chairmanship, the regional bloc has elevated sustainable aviation as a new area of priority, and during the meeting, members states have agreed to adopt a 10-year action plan called ASAAP, which is expected to drive sustainable aviation growth in the ASEAN region.
Developed by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, the ASEAN Sustainable Aviation Action Plan will try to achieve this objective through sharing of best practices, capacity building, information exchange and collaboration, starting with the production and deployment of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
In 2022 and 2023, Singapore’s aviation authority organised four sustainability forums covering different topics, including policies, production pathways and feedstock studies for SAF, airport decarbonisation, aviation decarbonisation efforts by ASEAN dialogue partners and the industry, as well as international policies and initiatives.
The new sustainable aviation action plan will be tabled for adoption at the 29th ASEAN Transport Ministers meeting to be held from 7 to 10 November 2023.
