An ASL Airlines B737-400, on behalf of EAT Leipzig, on behalf of DHL on a freight flight from Paris Charles de Gaulle to Milan Bergamo overran the runway at Milan Bergamo’s Orio al Serio Airport amid thunderstorms and poor weather early Friday morning local time.
The aircraft broke through the airport perimeter fence, a parking lot, a guardrail and came to a stop on a road about 580 meters past the end of the runway. The aircraft sustained substantial damage and both pilots were taken to hospital. Italy’s ANSV is investigating the incident and on the afternoon of 5 August confirmed that both captain and first officer remained unharmed.
An observer on the ground reported the aircraft touched down somewhere between taxiways D and G, about 1,900 to 2,400 metres down the runway and about 50 to 550 meters before the runway end. It appeared the crew attempted to go around, however, the aircraft was unable to gain altitude.
