The Boeing 737-800 was en route from Dubai when it overshot the runway and crashed in a ravine at the end of Runway 24 at Mangalore Airport in southern India before bursting into flames. There are eight survivors from the 160 passengers and six crew who were onboard.
Survivors of India’s worst aviation disaster in 14 years described hearing a loud thud shortly after touchdown and the fuselage ruptured when the aircraft hit landing lights at the end of the runway. Mangalore’s airport is located on a hilltop and the main Runway 24/06 has gorges at either end.
