Airbus will meet its target of delivering 12 A380 super jumbo aircraft this year, the company’s chief executive pledged recently, brushing aside reports that manufacturing and engineering difficulties had again put the project behind schedule. Following earlier trials with Boeing, Airbus and Pratt & Whitney (P&W) have commenced a series of flight tests to evaluate the ‘PurePower’ PW1000G technology demonstrator engine which features P&W’s patented ‘Geared Turbofan’ (GTF) architecture. Airbus and GKN have signed a contract under which GKN will purchase the wing component and assemblies manufacturing unit based at Airbus’ site at Filton, near Bristol, UK. This includes all operational business, assets and activities being transferred to GKN. Airbus has finalised a Total Support Package (TSP) agreement with Singapore Airlines to maintain its future fleet of 19 A330 aircraft. The TSP, which will be performed by Airbus Customer Service, will provide fleet management in addition to line and base maintenance as well as full component support. Airbus COO-Customers John Leahy said the manufacturer has agreed to sell 280 additional aircraft to Chinese airlines. He was in Tianjin to mark the opening of the newest A320 Family Final Assembly Line. Leahy said as many as 160 of the new aircraft orders could be approved by Beijing and officially announced by year end.
