Nearly a six-month long plunge in cargo traffic has leveled out in May for major European carriers, giving hope to earlier sentiments that the global economic contagion will not get any worse. Air Transport Services Group, Inc. announced it has commenced a new wide-body freighter service for Qantas Freight between Australia and New Zealand, and for DHL between Europe and Africa. No upturn before 2010 says Kuehne & Nagel
Swiss logistics group Kuehne & Nagel has seen the pace of decline slow, but does not expect a sustainable recovery before 2010, its chief executive said recently. “The decline in the volumes is not as dramatic as it was a few months ago, but we are not seeing a definite recovery,†Reinhard Lange told Swiss newspaper Handelszeitung, according to Reuters. AAT's May throughput down 31%
Asia Airfreight Terminal Co Ltd announced its tonnage throughput for May 2009 was 37,039 tonnes, down 31 per cent compared with the same month last year with AAT general manager, Planning & Services, Nelson Lee pointing to the opening of Fedex’s new Asia-Pacific Hub at Guangzhou’s Baiyun International Airport as playing a significant part in the weak tonnage performance.
