The China Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), seen as a bellwether of manufacturing activity in the country, rose to 53.5 in April from 52.4 in March, according to Reuters. This is the second straight month the index has finished in excess of 50, which indicates an expansion of activity in the manufacturing sector. A reading of below 50 suggests a contraction. AMERICAS: US freight index shows further March decline
A key measure of industrial shipping in the US has shown a further 3.5 per cent decline from February to March after offering a glimmer of hope in February when it showed its first fractional gain in six months. The Cass Freight Index for shipments declined 22 per cent in March from the same period a year earlier. Freight transportation spending also turned negative after a slim month-to-month gain in February. AMERICAS: Boeing cuts 777 production by 28%
Hit by the global economic slowdown that has savaged the global airline industry, Boeing has announced production cuts in its widebody programmes from the middle of next year. The US airframer announced that its 777 production rate will decrease from seven to five aircraft per month beginning in June 2010, representing a 28 per cent cut.
