The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) proposes that newly designed aircraft types meet a CO2 standard from the 1st of January 2020, and that aircraft types already in-production meet a separate CO2 standard starting from the 1st of January 2023. The objective of this so-called ‘Opinion’ published by EASA is to incentivise the incorporation of the latest fuel efficiency technology into aircraft designs, and to address the predicted increase in CO2 emissions. The Opinion submitted to the … [Read more...] about Aviation’s impact on CO2 emissions

35 more airports are carbon neutral
According to ACI World & Africa Annual General Assembly (WAGA), the global airport industry issued an update on the progress it has been making in addressing its CO2 emissions, through the independent and voluntary global certification programme, Airport Carbon Accreditation. Airports Council International also released the annual report for Airport Carbon Accreditation (covering the period May 2016 to May 2017), showing how the global airport industry is delivering on its commitment to … [Read more...] about 35 more airports are carbon neutral
ICAO Council adopts new CO2 emissions standard for aircraft
The 36-State ICAO Council has adopted a new aircraft CO2 emissions standard which will reduce the impact of aviation greenhouse gas emissions on the global climate. Contained in a new Volume III to Annex 16 of the Chicago Convention (Environmental Protection), the aircraft CO2 emissions measure represents the world’s first global design certification standard governing CO2 emissions for any industry sector. The Standard will apply to new aircraft type designs from 2020, … [Read more...] about ICAO Council adopts new CO2 emissions standard for aircraft
ICAO reaches agreement on CO2 emissions standard
Governments, industry and environmental groups meeting at the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) have finalised the design of the first global certification standard for CO2 emissions from new aircraft. The new environmental standard was unanimously recommended by the 170 international experts on ICAO's Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP), paving the way for its ultimate adoption by the UN agency's 36-State Governing Council. The standard, which has taken six … [Read more...] about ICAO reaches agreement on CO2 emissions standard
EC postpones emissions standard until 2010
The European Commission (EC) has delayed, for the second time, the formal announcement of its baseline aviation sector CO2 emissions standard until mid-2010, Bloomberg reported. The EC had originally set a 2 August 2009 deadline for publishing a CO2 baseline necessary for its emissions cap for flights into and out of the EU and its related Emissions Trading Scheme, both which are scheduled to come into effect in 2012. The Commission postponed the date after Europe's main airline associations … [Read more...] about EC postpones emissions standard until 2010
FedEx targets 20% lower CO2 emissions
FedEx has said it intends to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from its aircraft fleet by 20 per cent by 2020. It said it already has reduced CO2 emissions by 3.7 per cent per ATM since 2005. Key to the efficiency gains will be the replacement of its 90 727Fs with at least 87 757-200 converted freighters by 2016. The 757s will reduce "fuel consumption up to 36 per cent while providing 20 per cent more payload capacity," the group said. "FedEx is also reducing the amount of fuel we use when a plane … [Read more...] about FedEx targets 20% lower CO2 emissions
