Ethiopian Airlines’ Boeing 777 freighter aircraft caught fire while loading cargo at Shanghai Pudong International Airport on 23 July, said the airline in a social media post. Fire was contained and none of the crew or ground staff were harmed, the post stated.

Images and videos on social media showed clouds of smoke coming from the aircraft registered ET-ARH, with a large section of the upper fuselage on fire. News outlets say that the blaze may have originated on the main cargo deck which then burned through the upper fuselage.

The aircraft departing from Shanghai was on a regular scheduled cargo service to Sao Paulo-Santiago. The cause of the incident was under investigation, Ethiopian Airlines posted.

Reuters reports that flights bound for Shanghai Pudong International Airport were diverted to Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport after the fire broke, with data provided by VariFlight.
