British airport operator BAA has submitted a GBP2.5 billion (US$5 billion) plan to the UK Department for Transport to add a second runway and new terminal at London Stansted Airport by 2015.
The two-runway, two-terminal airport is expected to open in 2015, serving 68 million passengers a year by 2030. BAA said the airport’s development would take place in phases, with construction expected to start in 2011.
Key features will include a second runway that is 3,048 meters long and 60 meters wide located parallel to and 2,200 meters to the east of the existing runway; a 95,000-square-meter terminal building within walking distance of the existing facility; and airport buildings needed for the construction and operation of theexpanded airport, such as a new control tower, hotels, offices, freight forwarding,industrial and catering areas.
