Freighters Supplement in September issue
Boeing’s latest update to its annual market outlook notes that the world freighter fleet is forecast to increase from 1,750 to 2,980 aircraft by 2029. This growth is made up of roughly 740 new-production freighters and 1,750 passenger conversions. In the meantime the cargo environment is still on the mend from last year’s devastation which will likely have a lasting impact including the acceleration of retirement of older aircraft, like the B747-200 and put into question the economics of operating MD-11s and even B747-400s. More modern, fuel efficient freighters like the B777F, IL-96-400T, A330-200F and most recently, the reincarnated B747-8F have gained favour for their improved efficiencies. Conversion options still abound from the small BAe 146-300QT freighters to the A330-300 and B747-400 behemoths. Last year’s market upheaval also raised the question of whether the combination carrier model of operating both dedicated freighters alongside passenger bellies was efficient or even viable anymore. The upcoming Freighters Supplement in the September issue of Payload Asia will look at the issues facing the industry and the market for new and converted freighters.
