The Dubai service will carry cargo from Milan and will also provide a through connection for traffic from Cargoitalia’s North American stations. From 21 January, Cargoitalia will also add Chicago to its weekly trans-Atlantic service, replacing Toronto. The route will now operate Milan – New York – Chicago – Milan. The Sunday trans- Atlantic service will continue to operate Milan – New York – Toronto – Milan.
“These new destinations are designed to create more revenue opportunities from our existing operations, and to test demand,†said commercial director Roberto Gilardoni. “Subject to support for the revised services, and because our operations have now bedded in so well, we are considering stepping up trans- Atlantic operations with the addition of a Sunday service routing Milan – New York – Chicago – Milan, plus a third weekly departure to Hong Kong.â€Â
The new Cargoitalia is the result of amalgamating the original Cargoitalia (which suspended operations in 2008) with some of the assets of the Alitalia full cargo business, in April 2009.
In May 2009, the airline took delivery of its first MD11 freighter followed by a second in August and June 2010 it will receive another MD11F which it will likely deploy on a scheduled Shanghai service.
