Hong Kong cargo drops 29% in Jan
Air cargo through Hong Kong's airport dropped 28.9 per cent year-on-year in January to 210,000 tonnes, according to recent figures released by the airport authority. Almost all major markets experienced a double-digit decline during the month. While imports from Japan, Europe and Southeast Asia dropped most significantly, exports to Europe, North America and Taiwan showed the biggest dip. Thai aircargo plummets 50% in Jan
Air cargo volumes in Thailand slumped by almost 50 per cent in January as the global financial crisis continued to hurt exports. Total outbound cargo in the final three months of 2008 fell to 107,249 tonnes, compared with 140,074 tonnes a year earlier, Dow Jones reported. Cargo traffic at Singapore's Changi airport is expected to fall by 5.1 per cent in 2009, to 1.77 million tonnes in 2009, from 1.85 million tonnes, according to a Reuters report.
