Americas: Continental cashes in on bag-check fees
Continental Airlines said recently it expects to see US$100 million in revenue and cost savings related to a new US$15 dollar bag-check fee. The fourth-largest US airline also said it is comfortable with its bookings over the next six weeks. The outlook, which was issued in a government filing, came as experts speculate on how massive capacity cuts, fare increases and unpopular fees will impact travel demand. Air France has announced it will begin operating high-speed rail service to from London to Paris, challenging the current monopoly enjoyed by Eurostar which will come to an end in 2010 when new “open access” regulations come into force. An Aeroflot Nord 737-500 en route from Moscow Sheremetyevo to Perm lost radio contact at 3,600 feet on approach and crashed last month, killing all 82 passengers and six crew.
