KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will launch a three-times weekly service between Amsterdam and Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport in China on 8 May 2010 using B777-200ER equipment. A World Trade Organisation (WTO) report reportedly found Airbus received European subsidies to build commercial airplanes, but Airbus and rival Boeing both claimed victory in their longrunning spat. MIDDLE EAST: RJ launches direct route to Madinah
Royal Jordanian has begun direct flights to Madinah, Saudi Arabia, with four weekly flights. RJ president/CEO Hussein Dabbas said that opening this route is an advantage to RJ passengers who wish to visit Saudi Arabia for Hajj and Umrah. He also said the airline will resume its operations to Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, at the beginning of June this year. MIDDLE EAST: El Al sees cargo revenues plummet 46% in ‘09
El Al Israel Airlines has reported its fourth quarter and full year 2009 results revealing a 21 per cent drop in revenue to US$1.7 billion in 2009 from $2.1 billion in 2008, while the carrier’s net loss soared to $76.3 million from $41.9 million a year earlier. El Al said that its 2009 results were affected by the global economic crisis that began in 2008, which reduced passenger and air cargo traffic, resulting in a surplus of seats and cargo space.
