US cargo traffic decline steady
US airlines saw air cargo traffic - as measured by revenue ton miles - decline 21 per cent year-on-year in March 2009, according to the latest statistics available from the Air Transport Association of America (ATA). Further cuts in global freighter capacity are inevitable because of unsustainable loss-making among airlines, according to Europe's biggest all-cargo carrier. Robert van de Weg, senior VP for sales and marketing at Cargolux, said demand was down by 20-25 per cent, but estimated that capacity had only been reduced by 10-12 per cent. A new transatlantic joint venture between Air France-KLM and Delta Air Lines will boost each partner's profits by up to US$150 million, the two airlines said recently. April air cargo volumes at Hong Kong International Airport fell 19.8 per cent year-on-year in April to 257,000 tonnes, according to Hong Kong's Airport Authority. Indian domestic air cargo traffic has halted its sharp decline, with March figures showing a decline of only 2.4 per cent compared to nearly an 11 per cent drop in February, according to the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
