Globally, the 240 International Air Transport Association (IATA) member airlines - representing 84 per cent of global air traffic - carried nearly 48 million tonnes of cargo in 2013 of the cargo with freight tonne kilometres up only 1.8 per cent compared to 2012, but never-the-less an important reversal of the 1.1 per cent contraction that 2012 saw over 2011. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released data for global air freight markets showing 2.3 per cent growth in demand (measured in freight tonne kilometers) over June 2013, a growth rate that is slower than the 4.9 per cent growth reported for May.
