Singapore Airlines has posted its first quarterly loss since 2003, with a S$307.1 million (US$212.6 million) loss that compared to a S$358.6 million profit in the fiscal first quarter of 2008-09. The global economic downturn, swine flu and unfavorable fuel hedges dragged the carrier into the red. Semiconductor decline may be moderating
Global semiconductor sales declined again in February, down 30.4 per cent year-on-year to US$14.2 billion, but there is some indication the rate of decline is moderating from the fourth quarter of last year, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). No-pay leave extended at Singapore Air Faced with ongoing drop in load factors, excess capacity and falling yeilds, Singapore Airlines (SIA) has started preliminary talks to get its passenger plane pilots to take voluntary no-pay leave. Singapore Airlines, the world's most profitable carrier, has said it will slash passenger capacity by 11 per cent as the global recession continues to drag down air passenger and cargo demand.
