Although ULDs have and continue to play a vital role in boosting the efficiency of air cargo their value is often overlooked by carriers and ground handlers alike. But work within IATA has driven new initiatives designed to improve operating practices, implement  training standards and ensure only airworthy ULDs are uplifted on aircraft.

At the same time technological advances and changing industry needs have led to lighter and more sophisticated containers, including temperature controlled ULDs driven largely by the  perishables trade, particularly high value and sensitive pharmaceutical products.
