Dutch gov’t blocks Gulf carriers from expanding

May 26, 2015 by PLA Editor

Air carriers from the Gulf states will not be given new landing rights at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. The Dutch government is citing “unfair competition with Air France-KLM” as the reason for its actions. The decision was announced ahead of a European Commission decision on possible unfair competition due to the massive growth of Emirates, Etihad and Qatar in the region.

Speaking to Financieele Dagblad, Holland’s junior transport minister Wilma Mansveld said: “I want, together with my European colleagues, to take a tougher approach to the rise of airlines in the Middle East if there is talk of unfair competition.”

So far, representatives from the E.U. have remained quiet on the Dutch’s actions. Although, they are currently working with the Gulf states on an air treaty which includes clauses on state financing.
