Cargo flights and private flights handled by General Aviation have resumed at Brussels Airport as of today, but passenger flights are suspended until at least Friday, the airport said in a statement. Brucargo landside has been cleared since yesterday and cargo flights were given a green light today following the clearance of Brucargo airside.
Cargo security screening has reportedly been stepped up following the attacks with ‘known shipper’ cargo now also subjected to security screening and any cargo entering Brucargo warehouses must be cleared within 24 hours.
A handful of freighter flights did take place yesterday with the airport indicating these were only empty repositioning flights, the airport said.
A number of cargo flights bound for Brussels, or scheduled to operate from the Belgian capital have been re-routed to other airports, since the terrorist bombing on Tuesday.
The crime scene investigation is still ongoing at the terminal of Brussels Airport and until further notice, the perimeter around the airport remains off limits, the statement said.
Twin explosions at the airport and another at a metro station left around 34 dead and 250 wounded. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attacks and warned that more would follow.
