In this issue of Payload Asia, we are casting the spotlight on the air transport industry in Africa. The continent that is set to be one of the fastest growing aviation sectors over the next 20 years, despite being a financially weak region over the past three years.
Glyn Hughes Global Head of Cargo, highlights initiatives that International Air Transport Association (IATA) and governments are putting in place for a more secured global crossing to further facilitate growth in the region. It is interesting to note that the commencement deadline for the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) is only months away. This comes at a time when IATA calls on governments in the region to harness the power of aviation.
Optimism was in the air at the 11th IATA World Cargo Symposium (WCS) held in Abu Dhabi. The conference highlighted that the industry has seen a 7 percent growth over the same period last year. Two positive forces that supported the industry growth have been the expansion of e-commerce, which depends heavily on air cargo, and the rise of specialised cargo, such as pharmaceuticals.
The conference also discussed the impact that disruption has had on the air cargo industry. Export orders are strong and e-commerce is growing. The opportunities for air cargo are significant. But the industry needs to continue to adapt to this fast-paced world. The way forward is defined by digital processes, which will drive efficiency and improve customer satisfaction.
