Arup develops sustainable masterplan for NAICM

July 3, 2017 by Payload Asia

Arup, the global design and consulting firm in the built environment, has been appointed by Grupo Aeroportuario de la Ciudad de Mexico’s (GACM) to develop the sustainability plan for the Mexico City New International Airport (NAICM). NAICM aims to triple Mexico City’s existing airport capacity (passengers and cargo) in its final phase of operation and to promote economic development in the Mexico City metropolitan area. It is expected to start operations by late 2020, with a capacity of receiving around 68 million passengers.

GACM’s goal is for the NAICM to be environmentally sustainable and to be the first airport in the world to obtain LEED Platinum certification v4 at its main terminal. GACM seeks to adopt international best practices related to green airport operations by using renewable energy resources, promoting the use of public transport, and developing programs that would protect the environment, including water resources, energy efficiency, waste management, existing wildlife, and vegetation.

“Arup has a strong track record in delivering sustainability management plans for complex projects, both in the Americas and around the world. We are honored to take part in NAICM’s bold vision and look forward to setting precedents for future airports,” said Pablo Lazo, Project Director at Arup.

“We are excited about the selection of Arup. They have been involved in this project from the outset and their knowledge and global experience will provide us with a clear roadmap to achieve our goals,” said Sandra González Navarro, GACM.

Arup has been involved in aviation development for more than 50 years, with experience gained through a wide range of assignments at more than 100 airports worldwide. Arup has advised a majority of the world’s leading airports and is recognized globally as a leader in airport masterplanning, delivering airport terminal and support facility designs, and specialist aviation services. Arup’s previous work at NAICM includes early masterplanning work and engineering design for the terminal building, including structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering, acoustic consulting, façade engineering, fire/life safety engineering, geotechnical engineering, seismic engineering, logistics, threat assessment, blast analysis, civil engineering, bridge and civil structures, and lighting design, as well as various engineering services to other onsite structures. Additionally, the firm has worked in Mexico City on several other prominent projects including the BBVA Bancomer Tower, Torre Reforma, and the masterplan for KCC-Azcania.
