Australia Post driving innovation with new electric motorbike fleet

August 26, 2024 by PLA Editor

Australia Post has launched a new fleet of 175 state-of-the-art electric motorbikes, marking a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to safety, sustainability and innovation.

Manufactured by UBCO Electric Utility Bikes, these electric motorbikes are the first to join the Australia Post fleet and will be deployed across all states and territories, setting a new standard in sustainable delivery solutions. Capable of reaching speeds of up to 80 km/h, the new motorbikes will expand Australia Post’s capability to electrify routes that were previously challenging for three-wheel electric delivery vehicles (eDVs) to access.

With the country’s largest electric delivery fleet of over 5,100 vehicles already in operation, the addition of these electric motorbikes will further support Australia Post in reducing emissions, lowering operational costs and enhancing delivery performance all while prioritising the safety of its team members.

Speaking at the launch, Australia Post CEO and Managing Director, Paul Graham, highlighted the significance of the new fleet.

“This is a pivotal moment for Australia Post and demonstrates our commitment to sustainability and forward-thinking technology. This new fleet allows us to electrify a broader spectrum of routes, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and further advancing our sustainability goals. We are proud to integrate cutting-edge solutions that benefit our team members, our customers and the environment.

“This new fleet of electric motorbikes demonstrates how environmental benefits can be achieved while improving safety for our people and maintaining exceptional customer service.”

Oliver Hutaff, UBCO Chief Executive said, “We have steadily been trialling electric fleet solutions since our humble beginnings a decade ago on a New Zealand farm.

“Our latest model, the UBCO Duty, is tailored for companies seeking efficient, low-emission delivery options. By partnering with Australia Post, we’ve developed a vehicle that meets the rigorous demands of high-use delivery, while reducing environmental impact and operating costs. We’re excited to work with Australia Post as they roll out this new fleet.”

Key features of the new electric motorbike fleet

Emission reduction: The UBCO electric motorbikes produce no tailpipe emissions, reducing air pollution on these routes.

Enhanced efficiency: Equipped with the latest in electric vehicle technology, these motorbikes are more energy efficient, converting a high percentage of energy from the battery to the wheels.

Quieter operation: The electric motorbikes operate quietly, reducing noise pollution in urban environments.

Advanced safety: The fleet leverages safety features including LED lighting systems and reflective red side panels for better visibility, a low centre of gravity for enhanced stability and an electric drive system for improved traction and control.

Looking ahead to future electric fleet requirements, Australia Post will hold a track day later this week to evaluate the latest in electric vehicle technologies.  Australia Post van and truck drivers will test and assess a diverse range of vehicles equipped with the latest technology. This hands-on assessment is essential for ensuring that any new fleet additions meet the practical, real-world demands of the Australia Post delivery team.

Customers can expect to see the new fleet out and about delivering for the community from next month.

In addition to these new electric motorbikes, Australia Post operates eDVs, electric pushbikes and electric trucks.
