Changi Airport’s operating indicators for Q3 2024

October 28, 2024 by PLA Editor

Singapore Changi Airport handled 16.8 million passenger movements from July to September 2024, registering a year-on-year increase of 10.0%. This was 97.4% of the passenger movements recorded in the third quarter of 2019. Aircraft movements, including landings and take-offs, totalled 92,100 for the quarter, up 7.5% year-on-year.

Among the regions, North Asia remained the forerunner this quarter, recording a growth of 27.0% and close to 50% more passenger traffic year-to-date compared to 2023. Changi Airport’s top five markets for Q3 2024 were China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia and Thailand.

Passenger traffic between China and Singapore continued to post strong growth, recording a 50% year-on-year increase for the quarter, placing China as Changi’s top source market. Hong Kong and Japan also recorded significant growth, with traffic for the quarter surpassing 2023 levels by more than 20%.

Among Changi’s top 10 cities, Shanghai witnessed the strongest growth for the second consecutive quarter, with year-to-date traffic more than doubled compared to a year ago. Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, London, Melbourne and Tokyo were the other top 10 cities registering year-on-year double-digit growth for the quarter.

For the quarter, Changi Airport registered 512,000 tonnes of airfreight throughput, exceeding the same period last year by 13.5%. Growth was seen across all cargo flows – exports, imports and transhipments, contributed by major improvements in cargo flows between Singapore and China, as well as the United States. For this period, Changi’s top five air cargo markets were Australia, China, Hong Kong, India and the United States.

Mr. Lim Ching Kiat, Changi Airport Group’s Executive Vice President for Air Hub and Cargo Development said, “North Asia continued to be the top performer this quarter, building on the strong momentum we have seen over the past year. Markets like China, Hong Kong and Japan have shown good growth for both outbound and inbound travel. This year, we have partnered closely with Chinese carriers to expand connectivity by adding four new routes to Jieyang Chaoshan, Linyi, Quanzhou and Taiyuan, and more flights to key cities like Shanghai, Beijing and Chongqing. With the upcoming year-end travel season upon us, we hope to welcome more travellers to Changi Airport.”

As of 1 October, 96 airlines operate over 7,000 weekly scheduled flights at Changi Airport, connecting Singapore to 161 cities in 50 countries and territories worldwide.
