Swissport marks 30 years of global leadership, innovation and excellence

August 18, 2026 by PLA Editor

Swissport celebrates its 30th anniversary, marking three decades of transforming aviation services from a Swiss ground handling provider into the world’s leading ground operations, air cargo handling and airport hospitality company. The milestone follows a record-breaking 2025, in which Swissport achieved revenues of €3.9 billion and reinforced its position as the global leader in aviation services.
Pioneering aviation services

Founded on 16 August 1996 as Swissair Ground Services International AG following its legal separation from Swissair, Swissport began operations at Switzerland’s largest airports in Zurich, Geneva and Basel. This milestone laid the foundation for an extraordinary international growth story built on operational excellence, safety and customer trust.

Today, Swissport serves approximately 850 airline customers across a network of more than 300 airports in 49 countries. Over the past three decades, the company has evolved into the global partner of choice for airlines seeking reliable, efficient and innovative ground services, while continuing to set industry benchmarks for safety, quality, and operational performance.

“As we mark our 30th anniversary, we celebrate the people, partnerships and pioneering spirit that have defined Swissport’s journey,” said Warwick Brady, President and CEO of Swissport International. “From its beginnings in Switzerland to becoming a trusted global brand, Swissport has never stood still. Our performance demonstrates the strength of our long-term strategy and the resilience of our successful business. Leveraging our scale, unique operating model and technology capabilities, we are building the leading AI-enabled aviation services platform while continuing to invest in our people, expand our global footprint and deliver world-class services to our customers worldwide.”

A business built for long-term growth
Swissport’s diversified and unique operating model, unwavering commitment to safety and customer focus have underpinned its sustainable growth. As the company approaches its fourth decade, that strategy is delivering industry-leading performance.

In the past five years, Swissport has doubled its turnover while expanding margins, reflecting the strength of its diversified portfolio and disciplined business transformation. Between 2023 and 2025, the company achieved a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in revenue of 7.2%, with an increase in turnover of more than €500 million over the period. This performance was underpinned by broad-based revenue growth across the portfolio, with a CAGR of 5.6% in ground handling (including fueling), 10.1% in cargo, and 20.8% in hospitality.

Across its global network, Swissport handles 4 million flights, serves 243 million passengers and processes 5.2 million tons of air cargo annually across 126 cargo warehouses. Its Aspire Pre-Flight Hospitality business has also achieved record performance welcoming 6.4 million guests across 110 airport lounges worldwide.

Accelerating growth in strategic markets
Swissport has continued to expand its global footprint in some of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets. It entered China with operations at Shanghai Pudong Airport, the world’s second-largest air cargo hub and the most technologically advanced globally. It has also expanded its presence in Saudi Arabia, growing its network to 16 airports, reinforced its UK position through the acquisition of ASC in 2025 and continues to strengthen its leading presence in Latin America, where it operates at 85 airports across 15 countries.

Investments in cargo infrastructure have supported the expansion of operations at Manchester, Amsterdam, Sofia, Liège and New York (JFK), among others, strengthening capabilities across a broad range of cargo segments, including e-commerce, pharmaceuticals, temperature-sensitive products and perishables. Premium hospitality services have also been further enhanced to meet the evolving needs of global travel and trade.

Shaping the airport of the future
Technology is at the heart of Swissport’s long-term strategy. The company is transforming aviation services by integrating artificial intelligence, data analytics, robotics and automation into daily operations across its global network.

Every aircraft turnaround generates hundreds of data points. By harnessing this information, Swissport provides its teams with real-time operational insights that improve safety, efficiency and decision-making. Through Swissport Labs, its in-house innovation hub, these technologies are being translated into practical solutions that solve real operational challenges.

Among Swissport’s latest innovations are:

  • TurnSmart, which uses AI-powered cameras to provide continuous visibility throughout aircraft turnarounds.
AI-enabled dashboard cameras across the North American vehicle fleet, reducing operational incidents by 60% within six months.
  • SmartGSE, which tracks ground support equipment across airports, reducing time spent locating critical assets.
  • OneKnowledge, an AI-powered application that instantly answers operational questions in employees’ native languages.
  • MatchBox, Swissport’s digital passenger documentation platform, which has successfully completed more than 4.26 million document validations without a single error, helping airlines reduce inadmissible passenger cases and improve compliance.

Innovation is also transforming Swissport’s cargo operations. At Shanghai Pudong Airport, AI-enabled warehouse systems process up to 3,500 parcels per hour with 99.5% accuracy, enabling international shipments to reach their destinations up to two days faster. At Zurich Airport, Swissport is pioneering the next generation of intelligent ground handling equipment through the trial of a fully autonomous baggage handling vehicle.

Leading sustainability transition
Alongside digital transformation, sustainability remains central to Swissport’s long-term strategy. The company is ranked among the top one percent of companies worldwide for sustainability performance by EcoVadis and continues to lead the aviation services industry’s transition towards lower-emission ground operations.

Swissport now operates the world’s largest electric ground support equipment (GSE) fleet, with over 27% of its global vehicles already electric. Continued investment in cleaner technologies, operational efficiency and responsible business practices supports both the company’s environmental ambitions and those of its airline customers.

Looking ahead
Thirty years after its founding, Swissport continues to look firmly towards the future. As airports become increasingly connected, data-driven and automated, the company is harnessing technologies that enhance safety, improve operational resilience and deliver greater value for customers.

Supporting this ambition is Swissport Academy, which provides structured career pathways and targeted training across all operational roles through a modern learning management system. In 2025, employees completed more than two million training sessions, with a strong emphasis on health and safety through immersive learning methods.

This integrated focus on safety, people and talent development underpins consistent operational excellence across Swissport’s global network. “At the heart of this success are our 63,000 highly skilled people, whose expertise, commitment and dedication enable safe and reliable operations every day, everywhere. As we enter our next chapter, driven by AI, automation and sustainability, Swissport is shaping the future of aviation services for airlines, airports, passengers and cargo customers around the world,” said Warwick Brady.
