In July, Liege Airport continued to grow both in terms of aircraft movements and tonnage carried. This was the 7th consecutive month of growth.
In July 2024, the number of cargo aircraft movements was up 18% on July 2023 (2,259 vs. 1,920). And tonnage rose from 81,474 tons in July 2023 to 95,471 tons in June 2024, a spectacular 17% increase!
These figures confirm Airport Council International’s analysis for 2024, which places LGG among the top-performing airports in Europe: “In H1, freight traffic across the European airport network increased by +9.6% over the same period last year, with EU+ airports at +8.1% and those in the rest of Europe at +20.1%. Overall, freight traffic stood at +6.2% above pre-pandemic (H1 2019) levels. Amongst the top 10 European airports for freight traffic, the best performances in H1 compared to the same period last year came from: Istanbul (+32.2%), Madrid (+19.3%), London Heathrow (+15.8%), Liege (+15.0%), Milan-Malpensa (+12.2%), and Frankfurt (+9.1%). Aircraft movements increased by +6.4% in H1 across the European airport network compared to the same period last year, and remained -5.3% below pre-pandemic levels (H1 2019).”
This volume growth at Liege Airport exceeds the global trend for freight transport. As noted in the latest analysis published by Xeneta, “Global average air cargo spot rates reached USD 2.66 per kg in July, +20% higher year-on-year. This was again driven by strong global cargo demand growth. July volumes rose +13% year-on- year, thanks to buoyant e-commerce demand from Asia and the comparatively low demand base in the corresponding month in 2023.”
These results align with the airport’s master plan called “Vision 2040” which enables Liege Airport to further develop its position as the biggest European freighter hub.
