PRD airports struggle as US cargo dries up

October 1, 2008 by PLA Editor

The air cargo industry in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) is under pressure as a result of the US-driven slowdown in the global economy along with the growth of Hong Kong International Airport’s cargo activities. This month saw the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Cathay Pacific cargo terminal, set to open in 2011, as well as a doubling of capacity at DHL’s central Asia hub. Lilian Chan, Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminal’s (Hactl) general manager of marketing and customer service, … [Read more...] about PRD airports struggle as US cargo dries up

London mayor proposes Heathrow shift

London mayor Boris Johnson has proposed closing down Heathrow Airport and replacing it with a 24- hour airport in the Thames estuary, the Sunday Times reported recently. The airport, most likely to be located on an artificial island off Sheppey in Kent, would have four runways, but capacity for two more if required and would be connected to the Channel tunnel rail link. Johnson’s aides believe the scheme, loosely modelled on Hong Kong International Airport, could take just six years to … [Read more...] about London mayor proposes Heathrow shift

Cargo priority on Canada’s W. Coast

October 1, 2008 by PLA Editor

It’s tempting to observe that Canada has pretty much ‘missed the boat’ when it comes to air cargo. With an airport system long in the hands of government bureaucrats, a near solitary focus on passengers and the absence of any Canadian cargo-savvy passenger airline, let alone a globally-focused, dedicated cargo carrier, has all conspired to give air cargo a very low profile at the majority of airports across the country. It is surprising considering the vast country was founded … [Read more...] about Cargo priority on Canada’s W.
