Resurrected Italian carrier Alitalia is re-establishing itself in the cargo market due in a large part to its 25 per cent owner, the Air France-KLM group. Cargo drops level off at LAX Precipitous cargo declines at Los Angeles International Airport have leveled off after four straight months of declines of more than 20 per cent as the airport's freight operations suffered under collapsing exports out of Asia. Air cargo has "all but collapsed," according to the Association of European Airlines (AEA), who said traffic volumes were down by around a fifth for the first two months of the year, the worst figures on record. Passenger traffic plunged nearly 5 per cent in the first two months of the year and could fall another 10 per cent in March as the economic downturn continues. Open skies between EU and Canada ok’ed
European Union transport ministers have backed an 'open skies' aviation pact with Canada that will deregulate cargo and passenger services across the Atlantic, from 6 May this year. The accord will allow European and Canadian carriers to fly between any airport in the 27 nation EU and any Canadian airport and includes a provision for cargo carriers to fly onward to third countries from both the EU and Canada. 1,000 more FedEx employees lose jobs
FedEx has cut 1,000 jobs worldwide in an attempt to save more than US$1 billion in costs as the global economy flattens freight volumes. The cuts are in addition to earlier layoffs of 900 people from FedEx Freight in February. FedEx employs approximately 290,000 people worldwide. In March, FedEx reported that third quarter profits fell 75 per cent to US$97 million.
