Hong Kong airport’s latest figures showed resilient cargo performance over the last year as 2021 volume jumped 12.5 percent year on year to 5 million tonnes.
This exceeded the 4.8m tonnes recorded in 2019 as the airport saw the number of cargo flights increase 19.8 percent to an an all-time record of 82,935 flights with shipment on board.
Strong cargo volume reached a new monthly high in November, the airport noted, which carried into December despite flight reductions due to Omicron cases.

In December, HKIA recorded 477,000 tonnes of cargo, inching up 8.6 percent over the same period last year. The growth in December volume was mainly attributed to 18 percent year-on-year growth in transshipments, whilst imports and exports both experienced 7 percent growth.
Overall cargo to and from Southeast Asia experienced the most significant increases in December.
