Frankfurt Airport reports modest passenger growth for November 2024

December 13, 2024 by PLA Editor

In November 2024, Frankfurt Airport (FRA) welcomed some 4.6 million passengers, a slight 1.0 percent increase from the same month last year. Compared to pre-crisis levels, passenger traffic at FRA was still about 8.4 percent below the figure seen in November 2019.

Cargo throughput in Frankfurt grew by 2.4 percent year-on-year to 178,355 metric tons in the month under review. In contrast, the number of aircraft movements decreased by 1.4 percent to 34,828 takeoffs and landings. Total maximum takeoff weights (or MTOWs) dropped by 0.6 percent to approximately 2.2 million metric tons.

Outside of Germany, particularly those Fraport Group airports serving as major aviation gateways recorded strong passenger growth. Traffic at Slovenia’s Ljubljana Airport (LJU), however, slipped by 2.1 percent year-on-year to 89,868 passengers in November. The two Brazilian airports of Fortaleza (FOR) and Porto Alegre (POA), combined, continued to experience a noticeable decline in passenger numbers, down by 12.6 percent to 952,944 travelers. The decrease was mainly due to the shutdown of operations at Porto Alegre between May 3 and October 20 following the severe flooding in that region. Operations at POA have been gradually ramping up since October 21. Elsewhere in South America, Peru’s Lima Airport (LIM) saw traffic surge by 10.1 percent to around 2.1 million passengers. Fraport’s 14 Greek regional airports also experienced a noticeable 11.6 percent increase in demand, serving a total of 876,317 passengers in November. The Bulgarian Twin Star airports of Burgas (BOJ) and Varna (VAR) registered 71,015 passengers overall, down 14.8 percent year-on-year. Meanwhile, passenger traffic at Antalya Airport (AYT) on the Turkish Riviera advanced by 16.3 percent to about 1.7 million travelers.

Total passenger numbers across all airports actively managed by Fraport rose by 4.2 percent year-on-year to approximately 10.4 million in November 2024.
