Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) – Hong Kong’s largest independent cargo handler – has been awarded BEAM Plus BI V2.0 Platinum rating for the upgrade of its learning and development centre “Hactl Think Park” at its SuperTerminal 1 North Office Block.
Hactl Think Park is a total re-imagining of Hactl’s training facility, offering a number of specialised areas addressing multiple needs. “The Lab” is a multifunctional space for workshops and seminars; “The Space” is an experiential platform that blends visuals, information and interactive digital features; and there are also six multi-function classrooms which can accommodate a variety of professional training sessions.
Hactl Think Park attained its Platinum rating through the integration of several eco-friendly and energy-saving features. One of the key initiatives includes the adoption of Ecolabel-certified green cleaning products, which helps the reduction of the environmental impact and promotes healthier indoor environments.
This project also utilises high-efficiency Fan Coil Units (FCUs) certified by the Construction Industry Council (CIC) Green Product Certification Scheme, supporting the use of environmental building materials. The FCUs contribute to a significant reduction of up to 70% in power consumption, optimising the building’s overall energy performance.
Further enhancing energy saving is LED lighting, which achieves an estimated 20% reduction in energy consumption compared to the standards set by the Building Energy Code (BEC) 2021. Water conservation is also addressed through the installation of WELS Grade 1 labelled water taps, which help minimise water usage. Collectively, these initiatives demonstrate Hactl Think Park’s strong commitment to environmental sustainability and played a vital role in earning the Platinum rating.
Occupying the second floor of Hactl’s SuperTerminal 1’s North Office Block, Hactl Think Park was subject to the rigorous BEAM Plus assessment process. BEAM Plus is Hong Kong’s leading initiative to offer an independent assessment of building sustainability performance.
The main criteria for achieving a Platinum rating define the key elements of green interior spaces, including health and well-being, hygiene, site impacts, use of materials, water quality, energy efficiency, and indoor environmental quality. These performance indicators then help further integrate different green features into a user-friendly assessment tool.
