TAM Group launches dedicated Air Charter Division and appoints Fernando Carballal as Group Charter Director

July 31, 2026 by PLA Editor

TAM Group announced the launch of its dedicated Air Charter Division, strengthening its ability to provide tailored cargo capacity solutions for airlines, freight forwarders, and logistics customers across its global network.

The move formalises an incubation phase that began in September, 2024. Operating from TAM Group’s Americas regional headquarters in Miami, the charter unit initially focused on specialised charter opportunities across South America, validating the model through successful operations in markets including Brazil and Chile.

During this period, the team coordinated 30 charter operations, supporting customers across sectors including perishables, pharmaceuticals, industrial equipment, live animal and high-value cargo. The encouraging results confirmed growing demand for flexible capacity solutions that can complement scheduled airline networks during peak periods, network disruptions, and project cargo movements.

To lead the next stage of development, TAM Group has appointed Fernando Carballal as Group Charter Director. Carballal brings 11 years of air cargo experience, with a strong track record in airline, freight-forwarding and charter brokerage sectors. Fernando will be responsible for developing the charter business across the region and building a roadmap for global integration.

“The charter market is evolving quickly as customers look for greater flexibility, reliability and speed in their supply chains. TAM Group has strong airline relationships, deep local market knowledge and a growing international network, which gives us a strong platform to build a charter business that delivers practical solutions for both airlines and freight forwarders. I am excited to join the team and help develop a scalable charter platform across the Americas and beyond,” remarked Fernando Carballal.

Meeting growing demand for flexible capacity solutions
The establishment of a standalone charter division responds to structural shifts in global supply chains. Capacity fluctuations, localised bottlenecks, peak-season surges and time-sensitive production timelines continue to place pressure on scheduled networks. TAM Group’s dedicated charter unit is designed to bridge the gap between scheduled capacity and volatile market realities, offering full and part-charter solutions that provide customers with greater supply chain resilience and flexibility.

Customer problems they help solve
TAM Group’s dedicated charter capability will help customers manage peak-season capacity pressure, time-sensitive cargo movements, network disruptions, and complex project shipments. The division will provide flexible full and part-charter solutions for commodities such as perishables, pharmaceuticals, electronics, humanitarian aid, aerospace and automotive cargo, while supporting airline partners with overflow, ad hoc project and specialist charter opportunities that complement scheduled services.

Executive insights: Building an integrated cargo solution
“Since launching our initial charter operations in late 2024, the market response across Latin America has been very encouraging. Coming off a year of 23% growth in the Americas and our entry into the Mexican market, this is the right time to scale the business. We have proven the model locally; now we are building the structure to expand it. Bringing Fernando Carballal on board gives us experienced leadership to connect our regional expertise with our longer-term vision for global charter development.

TAM Group’s differentiator is our tailored, solution-oriented approach. We do not simply source aircraft; we work with customers to structure practical logistics solutions. Importantly, this new charter division does not compete with our GSSA business; it strengthens it. For airline partners, charter capabilities can help capture overflow, project and specialist cargo opportunities without disrupting scheduled networks. For forwarders and logistics customers, it creates access to flexible capacity through a partner that understands local market execution.

The establishment of this division reflects a long-term investment in the trade lanes that have supported our recent growth. The United States and Latin America remain a vital commercial nexus, and we see significant opportunities to connect that regional strength with TAM Group’s wider global network. By scaling our charter capabilities, we aim to strengthen our position as a trusted partner for logistics providers and airline partners across the globe,” said Fernando Garreton, Vice President and Managing Partner of the Americas, TAM Group.
