EUROPE & CIS: Alitalia acquisition and relaunch delayed again
The Italian government wants the €1.05 billion sale of Alitalia to investor group Compagnia Aerea Italiana, or CAI, to be completed by January 12, in yet another delay in the sale of the ailing state-controlled airline, Dow Jones reported. Industry Minister Claudio Scajola said the delay of the sale until after the Christmas holidays was decided to avoid disruptions during a peak travel season. Emirates says it plans to use all of the 22 new aircraft due for delivery next year to grow the airline further, and is not considering phasing out older aircraft to reduce capacity, despite the economicdownturn. MIDDLE EAST: Etihad heads for Moscow
Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has launched its maiden Moscow flight from its homebase at Abu Dhabi airport utilising an A320 aircraft. The five flights a week service to the Russian capital will be followed by a new service to the Kazakhstan commercial capital Almaty, which started in early December, bringing the total number of destinations served by the carrier to 50. SRI LANKA: SriLankan takes delivery of first of 5 new A320s
SriLankan Airlines’ re-fleeting programme has taken flight with the delivery of the first of several new Airbus A320 aircraft in November, marking the first aircraft to join the carrier in more than four years.
