At least 50 people were killed in Congo after an Antonov 26 cargo plane crashed into a Kinshasa neighbourhood shortly after take-off on 4 October. The twinpropeller aircraft belongs to Congolese airline Africa One. AFRICA: Fee hikes in Kenya
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has announced plans to increase the fees for services rendered to airlines and other players by an average 90 per cent besides introducing a safety and security charge of Sh134 (US$2) for every international passenger leaving the country. Passengers on domestic flights will pay Sh50 per ticket of departure while departing cargo will attract a safety fee of Sh67 (US$1) per tonne, according to the Business Daily Africa. AMERICAS: US flight delays worsen
Total airline flights in the US for the first eight months of 2007 were up five per cent through August, to 4.9 million, but only 72 per cent of them arrived on time, down from 76 percent a year ago. An estimated 100 million new travelers are expected to add to the congestion over the next two years. AMERICAS: UAL’s net income jumps 75%
United Airlines parent UAL Corp. reported third-quarter net income of US$334 million, up 75.8 per cent from$190 million a year earlier. The carrier said it will continue to maintain “discipline in capacity planning” as it implements a five-year strategic plan that focuses on its “core business”.
