Lufthansa yesterday raised its fullyear operating profit projection to €1.3 billion from the previous €1.1 billion. The carrier reported a €1.38 billion operating profit in 2007. Lufthansa Cargo has from 18 February commenced freighter flights from Milan to New York and Chicago. The twice-weekly service from Milan- Malpensa Airport is to be operated by an MD-11 freighter. SAS, Scandinavia’s biggest airline, is set to cease freighter services and shrink other cargo operations as part of a radical restructuring to stem losses and retain its independence in the fast consolidating European airline industry. Italy’s Alitalia Cargo, a subsidiary of the country’s former national carrier and Europe’s seventh-largest air freight operator last year, may be sold to Cargoitalia’s parent Alis Aerolinee Italiane that has made a binding offer of €14.5 million for the company’s five MD-11 freighters.
