Liege Airport weathers 2020; tonnage up 24 percent
Liege Airport was one of the few airports in Europe and the world to perform well despite the nightmarish 2020, thanks to its full-cargo operations. The cargo hub saw a 24 percent increase in tonnage to 1,120,643 tonnes from 902,480 in 2019. The total number of cargo flights grew 10.7 percent to 34,264 flights, with an increase in daytime flights. Air China Cargo, Cainiao land full freighter at Liege Airport
Responding to the surging e-commerce demand, Air China Cargo and Cainiao, Alibaba’s logistics arm, launched a new route to speed up delivery times between China and Europe. The first B777 full freighter landed at Belgium’s Liege Airport on 13 August, according to a press release. Despite a global economic slowdown, Liege Airport has achieved a new record with over 900,000 tonnes of goods transported in 2019. Liege Airport continues to develop, with a new record of 902.480 tonnes (+3.6%) of transported goods compared with 870.644 tonnes in 2018.
