The Frankfurt airport has been cleared for expansion by a German court after years of trying to get the expansion approved. As a result the airport can soon start building a fourth runway north of the current airport perimeter with an opening date of 2012. Lufthansa confirms disinterest in Alitalia Lufthansa has confirmed that it did not make an offer for Alitalia, which Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi revealed Wednesday. A Lufthansa spokesperson told both Germany's dpa news agency and Reuters that the airline preferred to cooperate with its Star Alliance partners in the Italian market. Lufthansa, Europe’s biggest cargo airline, reported a sharp drop in freight traffic in August from a year ago as the residual impact of strike action in July ended several months of strong gains. Lufthansa will take over Brussels Airlines, the carriers announced recently, in a deal that potentially values the Belgian carrier at €250 million (US$355.6 million) and could pave the way for its entry into Star Alliance.
