UPS opens first phase of Worldport expansion
United Parcel Service Inc. began operating the first phase of the US$1.1 billion Worldport expansion at Louisville International Airport last month. The first phase will allow UPS to expand its package-sorting capacity at the hub by 15 per cent, to 350,000 packages per hour, from 304,000 packages per hour. UPS has launched a new joint venture headquartered in Dubai to coordinate management and growth of UPS’ express package, freight forwarding and contract logistics services throughout the Middle East, Turkey and some portions of Central Asia. UPS sees net profit halved in Q2 from last year
UPS saw its net profit fall 49 per cent in the second quarter, to US$445 million with the company saying it expects the weak global economy to remain just as weak in the coming months. “The business environment in the third quarter should be similar to the second quarter,†UPS CFO Kurt Kuehn said.
