Cargolux and FedEx jointly delivered more than 60 tonnes of cargo carrying medical supplies and equipment to Beirut, as the Lebanese city reels from the devastation caused by the explosion earlier this month.

FedEx picked up US$11 million worth of medicines, medical supplies and personal protective equipment from the headquarters of nonprofit Direct Relief in Santa Barbara, California. The shipment was then trucked to FedEx’s World Hub in Memphis and loaded to a B777 before flying out to Luxembourg, where Cargolux operated the final flight to transport the cargo en route to Beirut, free of charge.

“FedEx has catalyzed and made possible a huge boost of urgently needed assistance to people in Beirut by providing its world-class team, logistics expertise and aircraft,” said Direct Relief President and CEO Thomas Tighe. “Direct Relief and the many partners with which we’re working to help, including the American Task Force on Lebanon, are profoundly grateful to FedEx for once again providing just an extraordinary example of leadership and action to assist people slammed by a humanitarian crisis,” he added.
