JAL obtains IATA CEIV lithium batteries certification

February 27, 2025 by PLA Editor

Japan Airlines (JAL) has announced that it has joined the community organized by Narita International Airport Corporation and successfully obtained the “CEIV Lithium Batteries (Center of Excellence for Independent Validators in Lithium Batteries*) certification”. This quality certification program for the air transport of lithium batteries was established by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

To meet the stringent requirements of the CEIV Lithium Batteries certification, JAL has restructured its management system for lithium battery transport. This achievement enables collaboration with freight forwarders within the community to provide a seamless, certified supply chain for lithium battery transport, including airport handling and flights. The goal is to expand not only exports from Japan but also imports and transit demand from Asia, a key production hub for lithium batteries.

Yuichiro Kito, Executive Officer – Cargo and Mail, Japan Airlines: “Lithium batteries are widely used in modern society, and their importance is expected to increase further with the spread of electric vehicles and advancements in the semiconductor industry driven by AI. In collaboration with community partners, JAL has obtained the CEIV Lithium Batteries certification to address the critical issue of transporting lithium batteries safely and quickly by air. Furthermore, to enhance the safety and quality of our transport services, we are promoting the introduction of fire-resistant equipment. JAL remains committed to building a safe supply chain for lithium batteries in collaboration with various stakeholders in the aviation industry, expanding our efforts further.”

Brendan Sullivan, Global Head of Cargo, IATA: “As the numbers of lithium batteries being shipped globally continues to increase, it’s essential these vital items are transported safely and efficiently. IATA’s CEIV Lithium Batteries was established to raise standards, spread best practice, and ensure regulatory compliance across the supply chain. We commend JAL for becoming the first airline participating in the Narita Airport Community to achieve CEIV lithium battery certification. This will give customers even greater confidence in JAL’s high quality and transparent performance in lithium battery shipments.”

Akihiko Tamura, President and CEO, Narita International Airport Corporation: “We sincerely congratulate JAL on obtaining the CEIV Lithium Batteries certification and appreciate their long-term preparation and efforts as a member of the Narita Airport community. We look forward to the further success of JAL’s cargo business at Narita Airport through the provision of safe and high-quality transport services for lithium batteries, which are anticipated to see increasing demand.”

As part of efforts to further enhance safety, JAL plans to expand the lineup of fire-resistant equipment (containers, bags) available for use in lithium battery transport.
