Munich Airport reports strong summer 2025 growth with record cargo and improved punctuality

October 21, 2025 by PLA Editor

Even before its official end on October 25, the summer flight schedule period at Munich Airport is already showing an impressive development. Between March 31 and October 12, the airport recorded a growth of five percent in both passenger numbers and flight movements compared to the previous year. Intercontinental traffic in particular developed dynamically, increasing by eight percent. The highly popular connections to the United States, which were used by a total of 2.1 million passengers, played a significant role in this.

Munich is not only growing at a higher rate than the German average in percentage terms, but with 1.4 million additional passengers from January to September 2025, it also has the largest passenger growth among airports in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland compared to the previous year. August was the busiest month across Europe. According to ACI Europe, the international association of European airports, Munich Airport showed the fourth-highest growth rate among the largest European airports this month.

The route network was also expanded further in the 2025 summer schedule: with destinations in Germany and 67 other countries, the range of services on offer was more diverse than ever before. A total of 84 airlines offered regular flights to 217 destinations from Munich.

New additions to the flight schedule included connections to Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific, Calgary, Orlando, and Windhoek with Discover Airlines, and Shymkent with Scat Airlines. Lufthansa flew to Oradea for the first time, and Discover Airlines took-off to Bodø. The connections launched by Vietnam Airlines to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in October 2024 were continued in the summer and increased to five weekly frequencies. Since September 1, Paderborn/Lippstadt has also been served 17 times a week by skyhub PAD.

Munich Airport also recorded very strong growth in air freight during this period. Compared to the previous year, cargo volume rose by ten percent to a total of 182,000 tons. With this freight volume, Munich Airport has set a new record and is now above the 2019 level.

Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport: “The current figures underscore the high attractiveness of Munich Airport for travelers and airlines alike. With the continuous expansion of our international route network, we are strengthening our role as one of the leading air traffic hubs in Europe.”

The positive development in punctuality is particularly encouraging: despite the increase in traffic volume, punctuality rose from 58 percent to over 75 percent compared to the 2024 summer flight schedule. Despite external factors such as thunderstorms and, most recently, airport operational restrictions due to drone sightings, Munich Airport ranks among the top three largest hub airports in Europe in terms of punctuality.

The increased use of modern CT scanners at security checkpoints is contributing significantly to speeding up passenger processing at Munich Airport. Since April 2025, the central passenger screening point in Terminal 2 has been completely converted to innovative CT technology. Five CT scanners are also already in use in Terminal 1. The new technology not only offers a significant increase in safety and comfort for passengers but also enables higher throughput at security. Ninety-five percent of passengers pass through security in less than ten minutes, and 90 percent in well under five minutes.

Thomas Hoff Andersson, Managing Director of Aviation & Operations of Munich Airport, explains: “The significant improvement in punctuality and efficiency gains achieved through modern CT scanners show that we are continuously optimizing our processes. In the coming months, we will continue to expand the use of innovative technologies in order to continuously improve the travel experience for our passengers at the premium hub in Munich.”
