Air France KLM Martinair Cargo and DHL Global Forwarding renew strategic SAF partnership to accelerate decarbonisation of air freight

December 23, 2025 by PLA Editor

(L-R) GertJan Roelands and Henk Venema

Air France KLM Martinair Cargo (AFKLMP Cargo) and DHL Global Forwarding (DHL) announced a new strategic partnership to advance the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and accelerate the decarbonization of the air-freight industry. Building on the success of their initial 2022–2024 agreement, both organisations have signed a new three-year framework contract covering 2025–2027.

For 2025 alone, the partnership includes a reduction target of 35,000 tons of CO₂-equivalent. This renewed agreement represents the largest annual SAF partnership AFKLMP Cargo has signed to date, reflecting not only its scale but also both companies’ long-term commitment to driving the industry’s transition toward low-carbon aviation. Additional SAF volumes and related emissions reductions for 2026 and 2027 will be defined as the partnership progresses.

Since 2020, AFKLMP Cargo has been at the forefront of customer-oriented SAF programs, while DHL has embedded SAF into its GoGreen Plus service as a central lever for its climate targets. Together, the companies bring industry-leading expertise, a shared vision, and a proven model for driving the adoption of low-carbon fuels.

The renewed contract builds on the success of a three-year agreement under which DHL reduced 77,595 tons of CO₂-equivalent between 2022 and 2024. This collaboration also enabled customers to make measurable progress toward their science-based carbon-reduction targets.

By extending their partnership, AFKLMP Cargo and DHL reaffirm the vital role of long-term collaboration in accelerating the aviation industry’s transition to low-carbon solutions.GertJan Roelands, SVP Commercial at Air France KLM Martinair Cargo, “We are proud to renew this partnership with DHL Global Forwarding, a clear sign of leadership. Our shared ambition and continued collaboration on SAF are fundamental to scaling the solutions needed to reduce the carbon footprint of the air freight industry. This new agreement reflects mutual trust, operational commitment, and a firm belief that only through close cooperation can we drive meaningful change across the air freight value chain.”

Henk Venema, EVP Global Airfreight at DHL Global Forwarding: “This framework agreement shows what collaborative decarbonization in air freight can look like. Emission Reduction Rights provide predictability, scalability, and transparency — three critical factors for sustainable aviation fuels to make a real impact within the market. Together with AFKLMP, we are establishing a foundation that can serve as a model for the entire industry.”
