A steadily growing share of freight is now being carried by electric vehicles, also on roads. This was revealed by a survey of around 250 trucking and logistics companies based at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) that Fraport carried out in the spring of 2025. The airport operator promptly responded to this finding by opening its first high-speed charging park for trucks near Gate 31 in CargoCity South. The facility currently has four charging points, each of which delivers up to 400 kilowatts of power.
“At Frankfurt Airport, we stay in close touch with our cargo community and regularly inquire about their needs,” says Michael Kuschel, the manager responsible for Fraport AG’s power networks and services. “Just two years ago, the unanimous message from the trucking industry was that electric drives simply weren’t catching on. But that had changed by the spring of 2025, when surveyed companies reported that they had started to order electric vehicles.”
The industry is now expecting a major shift in 2026. Truck fleets will be increasingly equipped with battery-powered drives. “At Frankfurt Airport, Germany‘s main cargo hub, we’ve provided a sufficient number of appropriate charging facilities,” emphasises Kuschel.
Installing new e-charging stations for sustainable trucking is also a key component of Fraport’s CargoHub master plan, which calls for investing in innovative products and freight processes at Frankfurt Airport. The aim is to continue developing FRA as Europe’s leading airfreight hub and make it fit for the future. To drive this transformation, sustainable infrastructure is being systematically promoted, supporting the airport’s evolution into an efficient, climate-friendly and networked logistics hub.
Expansion of bidirectional charging infrastructure
The high-speed charging facility for trucks is part of a project dubbed ReSkaLa@FRA, an acronym that stands for “living laboratory for scaling up bidirectional charging infrastructure at Frankfurt Airport.” The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy is supporting the project on the basis of a resolution by Germany’s parliament, and will have contributed more than five million euros from its “Electrically Mobile” program by the year 2027. This will help reduce the cost of transitioning to electromobility while also promoting innovation in Germany, with the overall objective of making transportation more climate- and environmentally friendly.
Fraport itself is collaborating with other companies to invest another 4.1 million euros in various projects at FRA. The plan is for there to be around 950 charging stations by the year 2027, 92 of which will bidirectional. In other words, they can be used not only to charge vehicle batteries but also to channel power stored in them back into the grid.
Net Zero: the group’s climate protection goal

Fraport has committed itself to achieving Net Zero status in scopes 1 and 2 at all fully consolidated Group companies worldwide by the year 2045 at the latest. Fraport is no longer only addressing CO2 but also all other climatically relevant greenhouse gases. Net Zero means greenhouse gas neutrality.
