Hong Kong policy address looks forward to airport’s future

October 12, 2021 by PLA Editor

Pavement works done on what will be the third runway at HKIA come next year

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) last week welcomed Chief Executive Lam’s support in her policy address as the airport looks to further uphold Hong Kong’s status as an international aviation hub.

The airport is pushing forward multiple plans related to the ‘airport city’ development, including the recently completed pavement works of a third runway which is expected to be commissioned next year.

The airport authority is also developing a logistics centre and a commercial attraction, along with preparations for Phase II development of a main convention and exhibition area. It said it has also been upgrading airport facilities and adopting technologies to enhance passenger services.

The airport group welcomed the government’s active follow-up on an equity injection in Zhuhai Airport and said it will continue to strengthen cooperation with the secondary airport in areas such as airport operations and talent training.

The AA said Hong Kong International Aviation Academy will continue to offer different courses and training to aviation talent in Hong Kong, China, and other “Belt and Road” countries.

“The AA spares no effort to reinforce the Airport’s position as a leading international aviation hub,” said Jack So, chairman of the airport authority.

“In the next few years, different projects of the Airport City will be completed. We look forward to realising the Airport City vision and supporting the economic development in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area.”

The entire three-runway system (3RS) project is expected to be completed in 2024. The airport says the third runway will allow up to 10 million tonnes in cargo volume. It recorded around 4.5 million tonnes in 2020.
