Philippine Airlines eyes US court protection from creditors

Local news reported last week that Philippine Airlines is considering filing bankruptcy protection in the US courts to give the embattled carrier more breathing space to restructure debts which have ballooned to US$5 billion, mostly owed to suppliers and lessors of planes. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released February data for global air freight markets showing a sharp increase in year-on-year air freight volumes. Growth measured by freight tonne kilometers (FTK) was up 11.7 per cent in February, compared to February 2014. Capacity grew 7.4 per cent.
