Cargo tonnage at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) reached a record-high monthly total of 367,000 tonnes in May, up a massive 41.9 per cent year-on-year, according to Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK). Hong Kong International Airport will see a recovery in air traffic this year amid early signs of improvement in the global economy and continued strong growth on the Chinese mainland. Cargo throughput in September at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) dropped 4.3 per cent year-onyear to 304,000 tonnes, while passenger throughput reached 3.5 million passenger trips in September 2009, 3.5 per cent below the same period in 2008. Airfreight continues to pad HK trade
The latest figures from Hong Kong's Census & Statistics Department indicate a growing importance of the airfreight industry in the territory as a proportion of overall trade. The trade value of air cargo rose to 35 per cent of overall trade last year from 30 per cent in 2003 with cargo throughput at Hong Kong International Airport standing at 3.63 million tonnes last year.
